In fact, you could describe it as a "survival" skill.  

Your child will not have unlimited resources and time as they move toward adulthood.  None of us do.  But we both know that when someone is first starting out they have even more need for resources just when they have even less resources to go around.  

Let's teach them a skill to help.  When you break this down into small steps, introducing "how to negotiate" isn't nearly as difficult as it might sound.
